I’ve stayed in the area a few times, and it’s the best for seeing palaces and experience Korea’s more traditional culture vs the trendier or more popular. I highly recommend basing yourself here for at least a few nights to put you in the center of Seoul’s traditional side. 

Why Insadong?

Insadong is by far the one area I’d recommend for anyone who’s visiting Seoul because of how central it is. Of all the popular neighborhoods, it’s probably the best suited for tourists in terms of airport transportation, getting around to the big landmarks, and getting a taste of Korea’s history. 

This area is near some of the major landmarks — Gyeongbokgung, Chandeokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village, Gwanghwamun, Changgyeonggung, and much, much more. In fact, if you can, stay in Bukchon!

1. Hostel Haru $

Hostel Haru offers everything from a 6-bed female dorm to family rooms, all very prettily decorated in a soft, minimalist way. It’s right by the river, and the closest subway exit is Jonggak Station, Exit 4 or 5. You can also expect a continental breakfast and a kettle per room.

2. Grid Inn Hotel $

Located near Jongno-3ga Staton, Exit 15, Grid Inn offers single rooms through family studios. A nice touch, along with breakfast, is that all the rooms are soundproofed, so it might be a good place for lighter sleepers.

3. Charm Hanok Guest House $

The closest station is Anguk Station, Exit 5, however it’s a bit of a walk to get there. It is, however, fairly close to Changdeokgung and Jongmyo Shrine. All rooms, from double to family, share bathrooms. Because it’s a hanok stay, most beds are floor beds, so just a heads up if you have a bad back!

4. Mini Hotel Insa $

The closest stations to Mini Hostel Insa are Anguk Station, Exits 5 or 6, and it’s about 10-minutes on foot from Jogyesa. Each room is cleanly decorate, most have a private bathroom, and you can have an American-style breakfast in the morning. Some rooms even have a terrace, and there’s laundry service available.

5. Makers Hotel $$

Makers Hotel is right outside Jongno-3ga Station, Exit 4 and less than 10 minutes from Jongmyo Shrine. It’s easily the coolest hotel in terms of design on this list, from the vintage-inspired interiors, cement halls, and minimalistic rooms.

6. Sunbee Hotel Insadong Seoul $$

Sunbee is closest to Jonggak Station, Exit 1. Its neutral design is calming, and you can also expect free parking and breakfast. Nearby, you can easily walk to Cheonggyecheon, Namdaemun Market, Jongmyo Shrine, and more.

7. Yehadoye Guesthouse $

Closest to Anguk Station, Exit 6, Yehadoye is near what looks like a traditional souvenir shop. The rooms have a more traditional, cozy decor, and there’s a rooftop terrace with pretty views of the neighborhood.

Closest to Jongno-3ga Station, Exit 6, Star Hostel is an affordable option on the list. It’s not the prettiest of designs, but the rooms are still clean and comfortable.

9. Sunny Guesthouse Seoul City $$

Near Euljiro 3ga Station, Exit 1, Sunny Guesthouse is a super cutely decorated hotel. From the blue touches in the rooms to the charming kitchen area, it’s a nice little place to stay. It’s actually a bit farther from the normal Insadong area in Donui-dong, Jung-gu, but it’s still quite close to the area and also Myeongdong.

Orakai Suites are actually luxury, serviced apartments, so there’s a bit of a homey feeling instead of a hotel with them. It’s nearest to Jongno 3ga Station, Exits 4 or 5. The building also has a swimming pool, fitness center, and a sauna.
